Alla fästingar bär inte på bakterien och bara för att din häst har fått en fästing innebär det inte att den har blivit smittad. Genom att ta ett blodprov på hästen fastställs om den har drabbats av anaplasmos eller inte. Hästar som är drabbade brukar bli friska genom en behandling med antibiotika.
En annan fästingsjukdom är borrelia. Det är en kontroversiell sjukdom på häst eftersom de studier som gjorts inte har kunnat påvisa några symtom. Under förra året påträffades även en ny fästingart i Sverige. Den är större än våra vanliga fästingar och de letar dessutom upp sina byten. Den så kallade jättefästingen föredrar stora däggdjur. Den här arten kan bära på blödarfeber men hittills har inget fall av det rapporterats i Europa.

Nästan alla har väl någon gång hittat en fästing på sin hund? Ju fortare du hittar och tar bort fästingen desto bättre. Det minskar risken för att hunden blir smittad av någon fästingsjukdom. Om din hund visar symtom som dålig aptit, muskel- eller ledvärk, trötthet och allmänt nedsatt allmäntillstånd ska du kontakta din veterinär. Glöm inte att berätta för veterinären att din hund blivit fästingbiten.
Det finns idag ett antal preparat på marknaden som gör att din hund slipper att få fästingar. Ett av dessa är fästinghalsbandet Seresto som ger ett skydd i upp till 8 månader. Det stöter bort och dödar fästingen innan den har bitit sig fast. En fördel med det är att fästingen inte kan vandra vidare till dig själv eller någon annan medlem i din familj.
De vanligaste fästingsjukdomarna i Sverige på hund är anaplasmos, TBE och borrelia. Både gällande anaplasmos och borrelia får hunden sällan några symtom och de hundar som drabbats bekämpar ofta infektionen på egen hand. Inga dödsfall har rapporteras i Sverige på grund av dessa sjukdomar. TBE är en aggressiv sjukdom som överförs av ett virus. Det finns få bekräftade fall i Sverige men de hundar som drabbas får en hjärnhinneinflammation som påverkar nervsystemet.
En till ny fästingart, brokig hundfästing, har hittats i Sverige. Den kan vara dödlig för hundar eftersom den kan bära på sjukdomen babesios. Den kan även sprida ett 40-tal sjukdomar till människor.
